If you’d like to learn the technique Susan uses to create her pieces, it is possible to
take classes with her if you live in or are visiting the New York City area. The jewelry process
used to create her designs is called the Lost Wax Process.
This is a sculptural technique used to carve your design into a special hard wax employing files,
a motor and hand piece, small grinding bits and something called a wax pen that makes it easy to
add design elements to your design before it's cast.
Your carved wax model is then transformed into your final metal piece at a professional casting
house in New York City’s jewelry district. When your cast piece is brought back to class
you’ll learn finishing techniques, as well.
Working in wax offers great possibilities for creating jewelry with a sculptural, organic feel.
Susan currently teaches Wax Carving at Fitzgerald Jewelry in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and on October
18th she’ll be starting a new class at the JCC at 76th St. and Amsterdam Ave. in Manhattan.
